Harry Potter Exhibit

An exhibit featuring the connection between the Harry Potter series and medicine is now open at the Texas A&M Medical Sciences Library (MSL).
The exhibit, “Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine,” is one of the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s exhibits about medicine and the arts. This exhibition was created and curated by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. It is scheduled to run until Nov. 8 in the MSL lobby.The exhibition “explores Harry Potter’s world, its roots in Renaissance science, and the ethical questions that affected not only the wizards of Harry Potter, but also the historical thinkers featured in the series,” according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s website.
Each of the six banners in the exhibit covers a topic: Potions, monsters, herbology, magical creatures, fantastic beasts, and immortality. Also, the exhibit includes an interactive website component for college students to explore contributions to science from magic’s traditions, and science and English lesson plans for middle or high school students. The local exhibit includes two cases – one filled with Harry Potter books and the other filled with items about one of the topics in the exhibit, which is switched out once a week to cover another of the topics.
MSL is located at 202 Olsen Blvd., on Texas A&M’s west campus, off University Drive at the Olsen Boulevard and Agronomy Road intersection. Its hours are: Monday through Thursday, 7 to 2 a.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 to 2 a.m.
Three events related to the exhibit, which will include treats, will occur Thursday, Oct. 30. These events are: A description of and explanation about the game of Quidditch at 4 p.m. in MSL’s lobby; a Harry Potter costume contest at 4:30 p.m., also in MSL’s lobby; and a Libraries-sponsored Texas A&M Quidditch team game will begin between 5:30 and 6 p.m. on Simpson Drill Field.
Simpson Drill Field is at the Old Main Drive and Lamar Street intersection, across from the Memorial Student Center.
